Look Well to This Day

The new year every year has us remembering and thinking ahead. Wedged between what was and what may be, we experience this brief moment called reality.

I recall a plaque Mum had on the wall seventy years ago displaying a poem translated from Sanskrit:

Look to this day!
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities
of your existence:
The bliss of growth
The glory of action
The splendour of beauty,
For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow only a vision,
But today well lived
makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day!
Such is the salutation of the dawn.

  1. Must have spent a lot of time in that room!

    1. To tell the whole truth, the plaque on our bathroom wall was only seven lines of the poem. So we didn't spend all that long in there. I found the extended text and thought it was worth the time. Now that we have three bathrooms, we can learn the whole thing.
